Biochar declaration

March 31, 2009
FERN and many other NGOs worldwide have signed onto this “Biochar Declaration” , to be presented at the Bonn UN Climate negotiations. It draws attention to a significant danger to people, land and ecosystems. More than a dozen developing countries and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification propose the inclusion of burying charcoal (“biochar”) in the already flawed CDM. This would entail industrial-scale production of charcoal that could exceed current use of fossil fuels, while condemning some 930 million hectares of land to charcoal production
