FERN aims to promote the conservation and sustainable use of forests and respect for the rights of forest peoples in the policies and practices of the European Union. The emphasis of our work is tropical forests.

We achieve our aims through the following objectives:
• Monitoring and reporting on EU-level activities in relation to our campaign areas.
• Researching and producing background information in relation to our campaigns.
• Producing the EU Forest Watch bulletin and publications on topical issues.
• Enhancing NGO co-ordination, specifically at the EU level, but also on global level.
• Facilitating an effective NGO lobby at the EU level
• Supporting NGOs and Indigenous Peoples’ Organisations by organising visits and hosting visits of NGOs and indigenous peoples to support them in presenting their cases to the EU.

We believe that changes in policy, both at the EUl and elsewhere, will only take place with a long-term, persistent and broad lobby of NGOs working together and with other stakeholders whenever possible. Therefore the emphasis of our work is on informing NGOs, enhancing NGO co-ordination and facilitating an effective lobby at the EU-level.
