Taiga is a green belt of conifer-dominated forests encircling the Northern
hemisphere, making up one third of the world's forests. It is under increasing
threat. The Taiga Rescue Network (TRN) was founded in 1992 in Jokkmokk,
Sweden, when its mandate and goals were adopted by 110 representatives from
20 countries. NGOs, Indigenous Peoples, or individuals who support the goals
of TRN are invited to sign its mandate, or, in TRN terms, its platform.
Over a 130 organisations, primarily in the boreal countries, Canada, Russia, Scandinavia, US, Alaska) and main consumer countries (Germany, UK, the Netherlands, US, Japan) are currently formal TRN participants, as well as hundreds of signed up individuals. TRN consists of its participants, an international co-ordination centre, and regional offices in North America and Russia. TRN's work is guided by an International Reference Group (IRG), consisting of a diverse representation of all of these regions. TRN organises a bi-annual international conference with a different focus and location each time, which generates new ideas, strategies and guidelines as well as providing the unique opportunity for future collaboration. The network strives to represent the equal rights of all participants regardless of nationality, gender, race or religion. TRN's newsletter, Taiga News, reports on forests and peoples of the boreal region, the trade and consumption of boreal forest products, the practices of the forestry industry and NGO activities. It includes insights on the struggle for boreal forests and provides in-depth articles written by NGOs, activists and scientists across the world.
