Over the past few months, a group of Northern-based colleagues, working primarily on reform of Export Credit Agencies (ECAs) and Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), have been discussing some key strategic dilemmas and uncertainties that they currently face in their work. One conclusion from these discussions is that the effectiveness of the various ECA, WTO and MDB reform campaigns would be greatly enhanced were they to be set far more centrally within broader work on democratising investment policy. It was also felt that the work on international trade could similarly benefit from a greater coherence with work on the International Finance Institutions and that both could gain from an opportunity to review and reanalyse the debates over foreign direct investment, trade and 'global governance'. To explore these issues further, FERN, together with key NGOs from around the world, will hold a small workshop in September this year. The workshop will bring together colleagues from both North and South, who have been working for some time in the field of trade and investment. |
