2022 Forest Governance Forum

On 24 May 2022 at 09:30 - 11:00 (UTC+1), join Fern for the event Building on COP26 to Promote Inclusive and Ambitious Climate Action. It will take place at the 13th Forest Governance Forum (FGF) in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, and will look at the linkages between forest governance, the green economy, climate change and land use.

The 26th United Nations Climate Conference (COP26) refocused attention on the urgency of implementing ambitious climate action that protects nature and respects people's rights, unfortunately, however, existing commitments and investments related to forests and forest communities are still insufficient and vague.

Objectives:

  • To examine progress and gaps in commitments and action to improve climate governance in the Congo Basin and beyond.
  • To formulate concrete recommendations so that Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Climate Agreement (NDCs) and just and transparent, and that climate finance leads to greater protection of forests and forest peoples’ rights.

  • Revised NDCs: What's in it for forests, rights, and livelihoods? - Alice Bisiaux and Jim Djontu, European Forest Institute (EFI) and Camille André, independent researcher
  • Strengthening the governance and impact of climate finance for forests - Marie-Ange Kalenga, Fern, and Brice Boehmer, Transparency International
  • Fern's short film on the importance of clarifying land rights in climate action
  • Case studies:
    • Are REDD+ and climate finance beneficial to local communities and Indigenous Peoples in the Republic of Congo? - Christian Mounzéo, Rencontre pour la Paix et les Droits de l’Homme (RPDH)
    • Community-based forest monitoring: A tool for community participation in climate efforts - Nina Kiyindou, Observatoire Congolais des Droits de l'Homme (OCDH)
