Open letter from NGOs to the Delegates of COP30

7 November 2025

In an open letter to the Delegates of the 30th United Nations climate conference (COP30), 49 NGOs from all around the globe highlight the crucial role that Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, and local communities play in safeguarding forests and stabilising the global climate.

The signatories encourage COP30 negotiators to:

  1. Affirm and strengthen collective land and territorial rights
  2. Enforce the rule of law to stop violence against environmental and land defenders
  3. Facilitate direct and predictable access to climate finance for Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and local communities and their organisations
  4. Integrate human rights considerations systematically into climate and forest-related policies

Embedding these priorities in COP30 outcomes is both a moral imperative and a practical necessity if we are to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The letter is also available in French, Portuguese and Spanish.
