COVID, forests and forest peoples: The implications of the pandemic for forest campaigns.

This is a paper exploring COVID-19’s impact on the work of those trying to protect forests and forest peoples. 

The paper investigates the links between forests and various aspects of pandemic recovery—from the prevention of zoonotic diseases, to job creation, to the role of forests as a lifeline for poor communities during troubled economic times. 

It looks at the EU’s economic recovery spending plans and assesses the risks and opportunities these funds may pose to forests and peoples’ rights. It finishes by laying out a series of suggestions for forest NGOs: monitoring how pandemic recovery funds are spent; calling out governments for using COVID-19 as an excuse to remove or not enforce regulatory forest protections; and prioritising the mental health and wellbeing of staff.
