NGOs send an Open Letter to German Minister Habeck: "We must end EU incentives for woody biomass in energy production"

For Germany’s new Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, woody biomass incentives were a “policy insanity” last August. Is it still the case?

Last August, in a good text on the future of German forests, six German green elected officials and researchers concluded: “Burning wood in coal-fired power plants is a climate and resource policy insanity that does not deserve any support."

The first author of the text, Robert Habeck, has just become Vice Chancellor of Germany and its Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, in the new government appointed after the country’s recent legislative elections.

How will Habeck’s correct diagnosis on the EU’s biomass policy fare in the current battle around the future of Europe’s energy supply and climate action?

To find out, we - along with many other NGOs active on the issue - wrote him an open letter, and will try to meet with him.
