What is REDD+?
REDD+ describes efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and foster conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of forest carbon stock.
Defining and agreeing such efforts has been part of United Nations climate discussions for years and has proven to be extremely controversial. The most glaring concerns are how to ensure REDD+ doesn’t support conservation efforts where forest communities are thrown out of the forests they have protected for generations; and how to ensure that projects to protect forests do not distract from the need to change carbon intensive energy and transport industries.
