EU consumption of soy and deforestation

EU consumption of soy and deforestation

Soy is the second largest agricultural driver of deforestation after cattle products (with agriculture responsible for about 70 per cent of all deforestation).  According to a 2013 study for the European Commission, soy expansion was responsible for nearly half of the deforestation embodied in products imported into the European Union between 1990 and 2008.

EU farm policies have played a role in encouraging soy imports. Early versions of the Common Agricultural Policy incentivized EU farmers to produce meat and cereals rather than protein crops such as soy.

The EU has made a commitment to end its role in deforestation by 2020. This will remain an impossible goal while policies and practices encourage demand for soy, with little concern about the deforestation or human rights violations generated by its production.

Fern is calling for an EU Action Plan to ensure imports of forest-risk commodities are legally sourced and ecologically viable.

This is the second in a series of background notes on agricultural commodities.
