Felling the Golden Goose. The Sustainable Limits of Finland’s Biomass Ambitions

Projections of future wood availability indicate that Finnish forests should be able to provide sufficient to achieve the country’s 2020 targets for renewable energy. Beyond 2020 it is difficult to predict whether forests will be able to meet the needs of the Finnish forestry and energy sector plus the possible needs of other European countries. This report sets out to highlight aspects of increasing biomass use that are less discussed but not any less important. Finland is a country with a strong influence on forest policies in the European Union and a country that likes to portray itself as forerunner in sustainable forest management, so these issues are relevant to all EU member states.
