NDCs and Forests - Taking Stock and Moving Ahead

2019 is a critical year for climate ambition and revisions of National Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Coordination SUD and Fern has hosted a multi-stakeholder dialogue on NDCs and Forests: Taking Stock and Moving Ahead, on 1 October 2019 in Paris on 1 October 2019The event brought together government officials, policy makers, forest and climate experts, and civil society representatives from Europe and the global South to share insights and policy solutions to strengthen climate action and collaboration for healthier forests and sustainable local livelihoods.

The multi-stakeholder roundtable on NDCs' aim was to:

  • Discuss the outcomes of the New York Climate Summit and what is next for the NDCs;
  • Consider the need and avenues for raising ambition in the preparation of future NDCs and implementation of ambitious climate action in tropical forested countries;
  • Exchange experiences, lessons learned and recommendations  to address challenges relating to NDC preparation, implementation, and finance in West and Central African and South East Asia; and
  • Recommend ways in which NDC governance at the national, regional and global level can be strengthened.

The event provided an opportunity for North-South dialogue on forest governance and climate action. It formulated concrete recommendations on stepping up climate ambition in vulnerable forested countries, and improving NDC governance at national, regional, and global level including increased community and civil society participation in NDC implementation.

The panel of speakers was composed by representatives from the French Minister for the Ecological and Fair Transition, Agence Française de Développement, the European Commission and NGO experts and researchers from Africa, Europe, and Asia.
