The right to agroecology: Using the law to support sustainable farming in Brazil

This publication shows how existing national and international legal frameworks can support sustainable agriculture in Brazil, thereby reducing pressure to convert forests to large plantations. Small-scale farmers are increasingly using ecological agriculture – agroecology – to produce food for themselves and for sale in local markets. Through growing several different crops on the same plot, and using organic methods of fertilisation and pest control, agroecology produces food that is both high quality and affordable. It also provides rural employment and helps farmers achieve self-determination.
