Webinar Roundup: Another chance to attend online conferences

Livelihoods, Biodiversity and Climate Resilience in Africa: Unleashing the potential of Community-based forest and wildlife management for building back better. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) collaborated with the African Union, the Congo Basin Forest Partnership and Fern to host this webinar investigating how to address challenges and strengthen community-based forest and wildlife management regimes in Africa. It is particularly important in the context of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, the Africa Agenda 2063, the Paris Agreement and new international partnership frameworks such as the EU-Africa strategy and the European Green Deal (December 2020).

2020 Cocoa Barometer launch event: The Voice network partnered with Fern to launch the 2020 Cocoa Barometer with a lively discussion among a broad range of stakeholders to learn why previous initiatives have failed cocoa farmers, and to explore three key pathways to end deforestation, poverty and human rights abuses in cocoa supply chains (December 2020).

EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030: What’s in it for Indigenous Peoples and local communities? Given the concurrent biodiversity and climate crises, international institutions are focusing on extending protected areas. But how to uphold land rights and involve Indigenous Peoples and local communities, avoid land-grabbing and other abuses, and promote nature conservation equitably? Ahead of EU Biodiversity Strategy discussions, representatives of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, NGOs, European Commission officials, and MEPs discuss change in the design and management of conservation programmes (November 2020). It is available in EnglishFrenchRussian and Spanish

Forest Governance and COVID-19 – Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) and green recovery plans: As COVID-19 grabbed decision-makers’ attention, forest governance concerns were crowded out. MEP Karin Karlsbro, Fern, the Centre for International Development and Training (CIDT), the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) and the World Resources Institute discuss the importance of keeping FLEGT central to green recovery (October 2020; recording and report).

Tackling deforestation through EU Due Diligence – lessons and proposals from Brazil: The EU is a vast consumer of Brazilian commodities responsible for human rights violations and deforestation, such as beef and soy. This webinar reviews the latest data about EU consumption of such commodities, and discusses political will to address deforestation in supply chains and how a deforestation and land rights observatory could help EU companies perform due diligence (October 2020; also in Portuguese and German).

Biodiversity and Carbon Neutrality −The role of EU law: With carbon stored in forests expected to decline in coming years, this webinar investigates trends, options and how EU law can help forests contribute to carbon neutrality by 2050 (September 2020).
