NGO position paper on Critical Raw Materials Act

Decarbonising and digitising the European Union (EU) economy will require a huge amount of raw materials. The EU is therefore working on the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), as part of their strategy for ensuring access.  

While the green transition is essential, it does not need to be based on the old, exctractivist model of the fossil fuel age - the mining and trading of materials like nickel, cobalt, copper or lithium also brings dangers. Quick access and streamlined permission procedures must never be prioritised over human rights and nature conservation. 

This Position Paper, signed by Fern and more than 40 organisations details the main issues and recommends how to make sure the green transition is just for everyone.
