Webinar: Unleashing the potential of Community-based forest and wildlife management for building back better: livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate resilience in Africa
30 novembro 2020

Webinar organised by FAO’s Forest Technical Network in Africa (FTN-Africa)
Monday 7 December 2020 – 11:00-12:30 (Accra/GMT) 12:00 – 13:30 (Kinshasa/Rome time)
Background
Most countries in Africa are committed to involving local communities and Indigenous Peoples in their efforts to conserve and manage their forests and associated natural resources sustainably. Many of them adopted policy and legislative changes to create enabling environments for the strengthening of local communities and Indigenous Peoples’ forest tenure and transfer rights. Despite progress made, the socioeconomic and environmental outcomes of community-based forest and wildlife management remain challenging in many countries. There is a need to make community-based forest and wildlife management fully effective.
On 7 December 2020, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations in collaboration with the African Union, the Congo Basin Forest Partnership, and Fern will host a webinar on Unleashing the potential of Community-based forest and wildlife management for building back better: livelihoods, biodiversity and climate resilience in Africa. The event intends to promote dialogue on the effectiveness of the community-based forest and wildlife management regimes in Africa. It will also explore ways to strengthen them in the context of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, the Africa Agenda 2063, the Paris Agreement and new international partnership frameworks such as the EU-Africa strategy, the European Green Deal and the Convention on Biological Diversity. Speakers will discuss ways to harness community-based forest and wildlife management to promote ecosystem services and livelihood security and recovery from COVID-19.
