Civil society letter on the EU/Mercosur Free Trade Deal negotiations
24 April 2018
On April 25, European and international NGOs send an open letter to the European Commission calling for the EU to put human rights and sustainability at the forefront of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Mercosur.
After highlighting the potential negative impacts of the FTA on the EU's climate, environment, human rights and agriculture policies, the letter urges the Commission to prioritise public interest over trade.
For this to happen, the letter calls on the Commission to:
- conduct a participatory and inclusive Sustainability Impact Assessment,
- support the adoption of an EU Action Plan to protect forests and respect human rights
- support agro-ecological practices within the Common Agricultural Policy
- promote a regulation to improve animal welfare in the EU
