On 30 March 2015, Fern and three political parties (European Parliament’s Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) and the Greens European Free Alliance) will hold a conference to urge the European Commission to deliver on an Action Plan to halt the EU’s part in global deforestation. The event will examine how EU consumption drives deforestation and what impact this has on community rights. David Kaimowitz (Ford Foundation) and Olivier de Schutter (former UN Rapporteur on the Right to Food) will give their views on the call for an EU Action Plan, as will Cargill’s Ruth Rawling, Silas Siakor from SDI Liberia and Susan George from Attac and TNI.
Although the event is fully booked, it will be streamed live on Fern’s website, www.fern.org from 15.00 Central European Time.
At this occasion, Fern will launch a blueprint for EU action on deforestation, providing detailed policy recommendations addressed to fourteen Commissioners.
At the beginning of April look out for a special edition of ForestWatch, which will give an update from the conference.
