Event - Protecting Forests, Respecting Rights

On 30 March 2015, FERN and MEPs Catherine Bearder, Linda McAvan and Yannick Jadot will host “Protecting forests, respecting rights,” a conference examining how to deal with the EU’s deforestation footprint. From 1990 to 2008 alone, the EU’s consumption of agricultural commodities and timber resulted in the destruction of at least nine million hectares of forest – an area the size of Ireland. The conference aims to build on the June 2013 European Parliament and Member States commitment to assess the environmental impact of EU consumption of food and non-food commodities; develop policy proposals; and potentially produce an EU action plan on deforestation and forest degradation.
