Discovering the role of food environments in sustainable food systems
Food environments are increasingly at the centre of discussions on food systems change. The concept has been adopted by a range of leading organisations and incorporated into several initiatives, including the EU’s Farm to Fork Strategy.
This concept has been described as the “physical, economic, political and socio-cultural context in which consumers engage with the food system to make their decisions about acquiring, preparing and consuming food”.
This briefing analyses the added value that the food environments concept brings to efforts to transition to sustainable food systems and explores how food environments can be improved through policy.
The aim of this policy brief is to further sharpen understanding of food environments and clarify what a ‘food environment approach’ entails for EU food policy and the transition to sustainable food systems.
