A gendered perspective of the proposed EU Regulation on deforestation-free products

The EU Regulation on deforestation-free products aims to curb deforestation and forest degradation driven by imports of forest and ecosystem-risk commodities. It is expected to be adopted in 2023.

This new report analyses drafts of the Regulation through a gender lens and assesses whether they will help the EU meet its commitment to be a global front-runner in promoting gender equality. It highlights the potential negative impacts the new Regulation could have on women, especially smallholders in sectors that provide significant income for women.

It recommends that the Regulation be strengthened to help achieve EU and international commitments on human rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment in consultation with all stakeholders and rightsholders, particularly women smallholders and other vulnerable communities. It also suggests working with women in producer countries to develop complementary supply side measures.
