2025 Annual Report

In 2025 Fern celebrated its 30th anniversary.

At a time when the EU’s progressive forest policies are under concerted attack, the anniversary gave us the chance to take the long view. It reminded us that real change can take decades, and the path to achieving it is rarely linear.

This year’s Annual Report shows how Fern is responding to the current challenges by meeting people where they’re at: detailing how forests connect to peoples’ lives in surprising ways, from energy bills to cholesterol levels, and transport, and how our campaigns are working to tackle these issues, including by listening to people beyond our bubbles.

The report captures the remarkable breadth of the global forest movement and Fern’s place in it.

This was epitomised in May when more than 90 environmental activists from more than 50 countries gathered in the French countryside for the Peoples for Forests gathering, which Fern co-organised. Oliver Kornblihtt from our Brazilian partner Mídia NINJA tells the story behind this truly collective event, and how it reflected the vision of his late colleague Marielle Ramires

The acclaimed author David Van Reybrouck puts Fern’s history over three decades into wider context; our long-time friend, partner and ex-board member Silas Siakor describes his innovative plan to save Liberia’s forests; and our Communications Manager Richard Wainwright recounts the vital role that Fern’s Forest Watch newsletter has played in our communications for the past 30 years.

Meanwhile, in her last essay as Fern’s Campaigns Coordinator Hannah Mowat writes how Fern will continue to help raise voices usually ignored in the corridors of power, in order to protect forests and the rights of all who depend on them.
