NGOs against additional delays to the EU Deforestation Regulation

7 October 2025

NGOs Statement EUDR delay 7th Oct

On 23 September, Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy Commissioner Jessika Roswall announced the Commission' intention to delay implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) for the second time. Fern and six other NGOs responded with a joint letter  denouncing the harmful proposal and warning of the catastrophic consequences that such a delay would cause, to the climate, the environment, Indigenous Peoples, and all those that depend on forests.

The proposed setbacks undermine the EU’s credibility and tarnish its reputation for global environmental leadership.  The EUDR delay comes shortly after nearly 200,000 citizens came together to ask the EU not to weaken environmental laws. The letter concludes by asking the EU to fulfil their duties, to meet EU citizen’s expectations, and to let the EUDR enter into application in its entirety and in accordance with the agreed timeline.
