The role of state forests in protecting and restoring European forests
14 Mei 2025
Twenty-one organisations from across Europe have written a joint letter to the European State Forest Association (EUSTAFOR) and members of its Executive Committee, about their recent position paper “Preserving forests, jobs and local economy”. The letter outlines important points which need to be considered by future public forest strategies, including:
- The necessity of improving both management and strict protection
- Employment and livelihoods
- The economic opportunity of restoration
- Public forests' crucial role in restoration and protection
A truly balanced approach to achieving all forest objectives would involve increasing the amount of forests under protection and improving management through increased continuous-cover approaches and making improvements to conventional forestry. Landscape planning would also ensure a balance of set-aside and productive forestry.
