As in previous year our work centred on five campaign areas: Climate Change; Forests
and Biodiversity; Trade and Investment; Forest Peoples’ Rights and Development Aid.
Within these five areas we carried out the following campaigns in 2005: Export Credit Agencies, Illegal logging, Forest certification (including timber procurement, Climate change, EC development aid, United Nations forum on forests and European forests.

Now almost ten years in existence, FERN has clearly emerged as an organisation that is internationally respected – both by its partner NGOs and by the EU institutions it seeks to influence. And following calls for ‘more please’ from those who have come to value FERN’s astute political analysis and strategic co-ordination, 2003 has proved to be another busy and productive year.
Continuing to focus on its core activities of finding out what’s really going on, letting the right people know and bringing disparate groups together on common issues, FERN has had a good deal of success in 2003.

The ‘impossible dream’ of reversing the forest crisis is the inspiration behind FERN’s mission. By the end of 2002 FERN’s team had tackled an ambitious work programme that included researching forest policy and practice, informing EU politicians and officials on the need for change, illustrating arguments with practical examples and – last but not least – acting as a facilitator for people and organisations from the South and East who want to present their cases to the EU institutions...

This review of 2001 shows the scope of Fern’s work and highlights some of our successes. In particular our report, Behind the Logo, explains how a credible forest certification scheme should work, and why currently, only the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) meets these requirements. The report was accompanied by a joint NGO statement, supported by most environmental organisations. With our strong working relationships and networks with other NGOs and Indigenous Peoples Organisations, we will continue to act as catalysts for change – together. And together we hope to focus attention on the social aspect of the forest crisis: human rights abuses.

The year 2000 was a milestone for Fern as it marked our fifth year of existence. Since our beginning in 1995 Fern has more than doubled in size and has become the leading organisation at the EU-level dealing with aid and trade issues in relation to forests. Our impact has been felt in the aid and trade debates as well as on issues such as forest certification and the intergovernmental discussions on forests. Our profile has grown dramatically in the last two years and we feel justly proud of our achievements.

1999 has been a year of change and drama at the European Union. For the first time in its history the Parliament sacked the Commission on charges of corruption and nepotism, and a new Commission was installed. The summer elections also put a new Parliament in place.
